A lot of folks usually think of an activity that would involve roughing it with their families. While the idea of lounging by the poolside or the beach may be tempting, it can also put a pretty deep hole in your pocket, what with the cost of the airfare, the hotel stay, the food, water and beach activites, and everything else that comes with the package, it all becomes a little bit too expensive. There are much cheaper alternatives, such as a dude ranch, sending your kids to camp (although that wouldn’t really be spending more time with your kids), and the most popular option of all—going out camping with the whole fambam.

For those who are on a budget, this is the way to spend lots of quality time with the kids. This is also a great excuse to put away all your gadgets like phones, laptops and tablets and really have some fun with them. The experience is the most important thing. They’ll have a taste of how it feels to sleep in sleeping bags under the trees, the stars and the moonlight. But what would make it even more fun (and have more peace of mind in the process) is if you invested in a tent. Oh, c’mon guys. The whole point of going out on a camping trip is to experience nature at its finest. To feel how satisfying it is to experience singing songs around the fire, swapping funny and scary stories, fishing and hunting, gazing up at the moon at night, counting the millions of stars right above you, bonding, having fun. These are the things that make camping that much more exciting than it already is. It may seem scary at first, not having all the comforts you usually find in your own home, but you’ll sooner find out that it’ll make one of the best memories ever.

And a camping trip wouldn’t be complete without the right gear. And what would make the right gear? Well that depends. For those who have been doing this a long time, you might already be used to taking just half of what is required to be brought. But if you’re a first time camper, here is a list of the essentials:

“The Coleman Montana 8 Tent is large – but not too large… I have set it up in my yard to check it out and try it out. You’ll need a campsite big enough to hold it – like it may not fit on an old school standard size ‘tent pad’, but it’s not obnoxiously enormous at all. I saw 3 or 4 people in the campground with this tent and really liked it. I wish it had a room divider, but that’s the only thing it’s lacking. It’s VERY easy to put up. I did it all by myself in about 15 minutes, the first time. I took it down by myself in about 5 minutes – and my first attempt at rolling it up, it fit perfectly back in the bag. I love the multiple power ports. I love that it has windows even with the rainfly – that’s a rare feature and I think it’ll be awesome for ventilation.
